SBRI Healthcare Call Now Open – Cancer: Screening, Earlier Diagnosis & Faster Diagnosis

14 July 2017

SBRI Healthcare is an NHS England initiative led by the Academic Health Science Networks to develop technology solutions for known healthcare challenges.

Launched on the 25th July the next funding round on cancer focuses on finding innovative solutions with the ability to transform screening and facilitate both earlier and faster diagnosis of cancer. Applications are welcomed from companies with innovative solutions.

Cancer remains one of the public’s most feared illnesses, affecting more than one in three of us in our lifetimes. This reality means that most of us will face the anxiety of ourselves or a loved one receiving this diagnosis at some point.

We know that improving the ability to screen for and diagnose cancer earlier and faster – using tests that are accessible and minimally invasive, will enhance our already record high survival rates.

Since the early 1990s, UK incidence rates of all cancers have increased by 12%. In 2014, 357,000 new cases of cancer were diagnosed – the equivalent of 980 new diagnoses every day. By 2035, there are projected to be over 500,000 people diagnosed with cancer in the UK each year.

More than half of people receiving a cancer diagnosis will now live ten years or more. But there is much we could do to diagnose earlier and faster and so improve patient outcomes and long-term quality of life.

Successful applicants can receive up to £100,000 (incl. VAT) of funding for phase one (feasibility) and up to £1 million (incl. VAT) for phase two (development) for solutions that match the needs of the NHS.
