SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

AXA PPP Health Tech & You Category Winner 2015
Last night AXA PPP Health Tech & You Announced their Signs and Symptoms Category 2015 winner, Cupris Otoscope by Cupris Health. The key to this category is finding those health technology innovations that provide simple, easy to understand information and guidance on what to do next.
Signs and Symptoms - Cupris Otoscope by Cupris Health
Cupris Otoscope by Cupris Health
A smartphone connected otoscope that enables users to take still and video images of their inner-ear to share with healthcare professionals.
NHS consultant ear, nose and throat surgeon Julian Hamann was inspired to come up with the device as a means of helping to reduce unnecessary ENT-related patient consultations.
The device captures images which can then be forwarded, along with notes, to clinicians, allowing for the remote diagnosis of ear conditions. The cloud-based system will also enable patients and their doctors to monitor conditions over time, cutting down the number of clinical appointments necessary and making it easier for doctors to explain symptoms to their patients.
There is considerable potential for using the device in remote areas where access to healthcare is limited, as well as for the 90% of children who suffer ear infections before the age of six, many of which develop into chronic conditions. It also has applications for medical training.
The phone case is IP-protected, fits all smartphones and costs just a few pounds to produce. Clinical trials are underway and the first sales are anticipated in 2015.
A quote from the judges...
"We selected this product because it is a simple idea with broad applicability.
It offers an excellent way of dealing with childhood ear infections, and has the capacity to break down barriers between patient and GP. The ability to manufacture cheaply and ship to remote areas is both fascinating and useful"

Mike Pallett at Cupris says
"The AXA PPP Health Tech & You awards are a fantastic platform to raise awareness of the incredible ecosystem of healthcare innovation in the UK. As a company, it gives us great confidence that such a distinguished panel of judges shares our vision for how healthcare will be delivered in the future. It validates our innovation, that was inspired by how we feel we can improve the NHS, but that can also be used to extend access to healthcare for those living in less developed countries with limited healthcare resources around the world. This is an important time for Cupris as we look to launch our product later in the year, and the recognition of this award acts as a springboard to accelerate the growth of our company. We would like to thank the organisations and individuals that have supported us in our journey so far, particularly InnovationRCA, MedTech Campus, Innovate UK, SBRI Healthcare and the Digital Catapult.”
